Every generation gets one collab that resets what 'grail' means. This one has the swoosh on backwards.
The drop
May 11, 2019. The Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 'Mocha' (CD4487-100) releases at $175 — brown nubuck over classic white-and-black Jordan 1 blocking, a hidden stash pocket on the collar, and the move that made it instantly recognizable from across a street: a giant reversed swoosh wrapping the lateral side. It never came back down. The Mocha has traded at four figures more or less continuously since the morning it dropped.
Why the flip worked
Plenty of collabs change colors. Travis changed the logo — took the most protected mark in sportswear and turned it around like a snapback. It read as defiance and inside-joke at once, and it photographed perfectly. Cactus Jack went on to reverse swooshes across Jordan 1 Lows, 4s, 6s, and Dunks, but the 2019 high is the one the culture treats as the origin document.
The gravity of it
The Mocha did something bigger than resale numbers: it pulled an entire younger generation into Jordan 1s. Ask a room of twenty-year-old sneakerheads what their dream pull is — the Mocha beats half the original '85 colorways. Whether that's beautiful or backwards is an argument the chart's comment sections have hosted many times.
On the chart
Reversed-swoosh customs are their own subgenre now — homage, parody, and everything between — and the voters can tell which is which. See the Mocha's live market price on its catalog page, then take the collab questions in Culture IQ. The retail-price question alone has humbled plenty of self-declared experts.
