The story
The Air Jordan 5 launched in 1990 with a design language borrowed from the P-51 Mustang fighter plane — shark-teeth midsole graphics, reflective 3M tongue, and clear rubber outsole. It's the shoe of MJ's 69-point game and, culturally, of the Fresh Prince era.
'Sunset' first released in 2006 as a women's exclusive, its white leather warmed by a gradient of sunset orange and Fire Red on the shark-teeth midsole. It never retroed, making it one of the more requested deep cuts in the women's Jordan catalog. The 2026 return marks its 20th anniversary.
Women's-exclusive retros have been a growth engine for Jordan Brand. Expect a clean sellout in smaller sizes and healthy resale on a pair that won't be run back again soon.
The deep cuts
- MJ's career-high 69 points — with 18 rebounds — came March 28, 1990 in an overtime win over Cleveland wearing the White/Black/Fire Red AJ5, still the highest single-game Game Score in NBA history.
- Will Smith made the laceless 'Grape' AJ5 a 90s icon on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Jordan Brand later issued an official 'Fresh Prince' AJ5 NRG in his honor.
- MJ wore the Black/Metallic Silver AJ5 through the bruising 1990 playoff wars with the Bad Boy Pistons.
