The story
'Johnny Kilroy' was the fake identity from Nike's 1993 commercials claiming a retired Michael Jordan was secretly still hooping in disguise. Jordan Brand turned the gag into the 2012 Kilroy Pack — six Air Jordan 9s, each themed to a different MJ alter ego.
Rather than re-running all six, 2026's approach stitches pieces of every Kilroy colorway into a single 'What The' style Air Jordan 9 Low — mismatched panels, multi-color hits, and deep-cut lore in one shoe. It also extends the AJ9's big 2026, which closes the month with the 'Space Jam' OG.
'What The' mash-ups are love-it-or-hate-it, and lows temper hype further; sources still list this as expected rather than locked — some trackers have it sliding to October. Buy for the story — the Kilroy mythology is one of Jordan Brand's best inside jokes.
The deep cuts
- The original 1993 Nike ad ran as an Unsolved Mysteries-style spoof starring Steve Martin, 'investigating' whether the retired MJ was secretly balling in disguise.
- The 2012 Kilroy Pack's six alter egos: Johnny Kilroy, Fontay Montana, Bentley Ellis, Calvin Bailey, Slim Jenkins, and Motorboat Jones.
- The 2012 'Johnny Kilroy' AJ9 swapped MJ's heel #23 for Kilroy's #4 and put 'Johnny Kilroy' on the tongue in place of Air Jordan branding.
- The 2026 mash-up is literally mismatched — Johnny Kilroy's black nubuck builds one shoe while Motorboat Jones's red drives the other.
