The story
The Air Force 1 has become an unexpected second act for Kobe Bryant's Nike legacy. Since the estate and Nike rekindled the partnership, the Kobe AF1 program has pulled from Bryant's early-2000s wardrobe era, tying Bruce Kilgore's 1982 classic to Kobe's personal history rather than his on-court signature line.
The 'Armory Blue' pair leans into Lakers lore: the light blue trim references the powder-blue MPLS throwbacks the Lakers broke out as alternates during the 2004-05 season to honor their Minneapolis roots — one season, one uniform, permanent nostalgia. A subtle snakeskin texture across the white leather keeps the Black Mamba connection front and center without shouting.
As a general release at $125, this is more of a wearable tribute than a lottery ticket. Kobe AF1s move on sentiment and clean styling, not scarcity.
The deep cuts
- Bruce Kilgore's Air Force 1 landed in late 1982 as the first basketball shoe with Nike Air cushioning — Kilgore road-tested samples by driving them out to colleges in a pickup truck.
- Nike and the Bryant estate let the original deal lapse in April 2021 before Vanessa Bryant announced a renewed long-term partnership in March 2022, restarting the Kobe line with the 'Mambacita Sweet 16' Kobe 6 Protro — net proceeds to the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation.
- The pair splits Kobe's two jersey numbers across the heels — 8 on one, 24 on the other, both in Armory Blue — with metallic lace dubraes spelling out 'Mamba Forever' across the pair.
- Mitchell & Ness still sells Kobe's 2004-05 powder-blue MPLS alternate jersey — the exact uniform this colorway references.
